Castling is a move in the game of chess involving a king and either of the player’s rooks. At the opening of a chess game or to be on the safe side it is sometimes a good idea to move the rook in the middle of the board where action takes place and the king at the place of the rook, where it lays unharmed. This is called Castling and it is special defensive maneuver. This move was invented in the 1500s to accelerate the game and also to stabilize the offense and defense.  It involves two steps and two pieces and it’s the only move in chess game when more than one piece can be moved in one go.

In tournaments there is rule established that one must move the king first, and then the rook, in order to castle.

Know How To Castle In Chess (In a Stepwise Form)

king and rook movement in order to castle

In order to castle following few move should take place:

  1. Castling is possible in a chess if there are no pieces standing between the king and the rook.
  2. The king and the rook must be in their original positions and never have been moved. (The other rook may have already moved.)
  3. There can be no opposing piece that could possibly capture the king in his original square, the square he moves through or the square that he ends the turn.
  4. The king should not be in check

Castling consists of moving the king two squares towards a rook on the player’s first rank, then moving the rook to the square over which the king crossed. If the king castles queen-side the rook must move three squares. However on the king-side the rook only moves two.

Do not forget that you can only castle once in the whole game.

Playing chess requires two-players, a chess board and chess men. In a chess game, each player has sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The purpose of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s king, that means when the opponents king is under immediate attack and there is no way to defend it from attack. Chess is usually played for enjoyment, as a hobby and sometimes as an educational tool. Chess games distinction is not clear yet as many games are also considered as work (such as for professional players) or art (such as jigsaw puzzles or games involving an artistic layout such as Mahjong, solitaire, or some video games).

  • Board game– game in which counters or pieces are placed, removed, or moved on a board according to a set of rules. Games may be based on pure strategy, there are chances of mixture of the two and usually have a goal which a player aims to achieve.
  • Strategy game– game (e.g. computer, video or board game) in which the players often use decision-making skills.
  • Two-player game– game played by just two players against each other.

Vital equipments required:

  1. Chess board (checkerboard with of 64 squares (eight rows and eight columns) in two alternating colors (white and black).
  2. Rank– horizontal row of squares on the chessboard.
  3. File– vertical column of squares on the chessboard
  4. Chess pieces– two armies of 16 chess pieces, one army white, the other black. Each player controls one of the armies for the entire game. The pieces in each army include:
    • 1 king – most important piece, and one of the weakest (until the endgame).
    • 1 queen – most powerful piece in the game, with a relative value of 9 points. The top of the piece is crown-like.
    • 2 rooks – look like castle towers and have a relative value of 5 points each.
    • 2 bishops – stylized after mitres (bishops’ hats), and have a relative value of 3 points each.
    • 2 knights – usually look like horse heads and have a relative value of 3 points each.

How each piece moves

Moving a pawn– pawns move straight forward one space at a time, but capture diagonally. On its first move, a pawn may move two squares forward instead. Also, pawns are subject to the en passant.

  • En passant– on the very next move after a player moves a pawn two squares forward from its starting position, an opposing pawn that is guarding the skipped square may capture the pawn (taking it “as it passes”), by moving to the passed square as if the pawn had stopped there.
  • Pawn promotion– when a pawn reaches its eighth rank it is exchanged for the player’s choice of a queen, rook, bishop or knight (usually a queen, since it is the most powerful piece).
  • Moving a knight– knights move two squares horizontally and one square vertically, or two squares vertically and one square horizontally, jumping directly to the destination while ignoring intervening spaces.
  • Moving a bishop– bishops move any distance in a straight line in either direction along squares connected diagonally. One bishop in each army moves diagonally on white squares only, and the other bishop is restricted to moving along black squares.
  • Moving a rook– rook may move any distance along a rank or a file (forward, backward, left, or right), and can also be used for castling (see below).
    • Castling– special move available to each player once in the game (with restrictions) where the king is moved two squares to the left or right and the rook on that side is moved to the other side of the king.
  • Moving the queen– queen may move like a rook or like a bishop (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally), but no castling.
    • Moving the king– king may move one square in any direction, but may not move into check. It may also make a special move called castling.
  • Castling – special move available to each player once in the game (with restrictions) where the king is moved two squares to the left or right and the rook on that side is moved to the other side of the king.

En passant is a French expression which means “in passing” and is abbreviated as e.p. It is a movement of series in chess which is performed after a player moves a pawn two squares forward from its starting position, and an opposing pawn captures it as if it had only moved one square. It is probably the most confusing move for beginner chess players. Actually, many may not even know that this move exists, making it the source of many arguments. En passant may only be played straight away after a two-square square pawn advance, or the right to capture “in passing” is lost.
After pawns were granted the ability to move two squares on their first move, the En passant rule was introduced in 1490 to prevent pawns from having too much power or freedom. En passant is the only occasion in chess in which the capturing piece does not replace the captured piece on its square.
Moves in a chess

Before then pawns could only move one square forward at any time, resulting in many boring defensive matches. The 2-square move was introduced to encourage more positive play and quicker development of the pieces. Nevertheless, some of the more attacking players felt that their opponents were using the move to dodge being captured by the forceful player, already on the 5th rank while the slowcoaches were still on their starting square. As a result, the en passant rule was introduced to ensure that attacking play did not grow unrewarded when defenders used the 2-square move for a purely defensive purpose. It is similar to the rule that prevents castling across squares under attack by an opponent’s piece. 5th century, most people played by rules which didn’t allow the pawns to move two squares on their first move. When the two square pawn move was added to speed up the opening phase of the game, it was noticed that it was now possible for a pawn to sneak by an enemy pawn on an adjacent file — something that was never possible when pawns plodded along at one square per move. The following conditions must prevail for a legal passant capture.

1. The capturing pawn must be on its fifth rank;

2. The captured pawn must be on an adjacent file and must have just moved two squares in a single move (i.e. a double-step move);

3. The capture can only be made on the move immediately after the opposing pawn makes the double-step move; otherwise the right to capture it en passant is lost.
