CB Blackburne Chess Set:
Dedicated to Joseph Henry Blackburne also known as "The Black Death". J.H. Blackburne dominated the British chess scene during the last quarter of the 19th century. He played the London International Tournament in 1862 finishing 9th in the tournament. But this tour paved his way to be a professional chess players as it cost him his job at Manchester. In 1868 he became the British Champion by beating the current holder, Cecil Valentine De Vere. His first major Internation success came in 1870, at the tournament of Baden-Baden where he shared 3rd place alongwith Gustav Neumann. Starting from 1871 to 1889, Joseph Henry Blackburne was amongst the top five players of the world.
After losing his job and discovering that he had a special aptitude for blindfold chess, Blackburne began giving blindfold and simultaneous exhibitions all over Britain and for most of his career, these exhibitions were to be a major source of his income. He is known to have played against up to sixteen opponents simultaneously while being blindfolded. In 1899 he also published Mr. Blackburne's Games at Chess. For many years Blackburne was a chess correspondent for The Field, UK's leading journal. He held that position until his death.
Having lived an illustrious life, at the age of 82 years, Blackburne died of a heart attack on 1 September 1924.
