1935 Botvinnik Flohr Reproduced Soviet Chess Set: Alan Dewey and chessbazaar proudly presents the replica of 1935 Botvinnik Flohr Soviet chess set. This venerable chess set's dark pieces are made of Ebony wood and the light pieces are made of Boxwood. Ebony wood is an alluring wood and probably the most admired wood for reproduced chess sets. The King proudly stands at 4 inches and its base is a robust 1.7 inches. The chess set comes with 34 pieces including 2 extra queens. This Chess set is triple weighted with felt bottoms.

Design: This legendary design is one of the most detailed design unlike many other soviet chessmen. They are hand crafted from the finest grade ebony wood and polished using natural buff polish. Each piece is generously weighted and features green felt bases to protect the chess board. Each chessmen is carefully crafted with dainty details that add a dash of opulence and visual appeal. Outstanding design features includes squat bases, contrasting colored finials, and the bishop without its mitre cut. The other chess pieces are also uniquely stylized to allow the set to truly stand out.

photo Screenshot 1.pngThe Superlative Chess Players of All Time: Dedicated to the Mikhail Botvinnik and Flohr(also known as Salomon Mikhailovich Flohr) match played in 1935. Botvinnik and Flohr, both played a major role in the organization of chess, making a significant contribution to the design of the World Chess Championship system after World War II. Mikhail Botvinnik was a leading member of the coaching system that enabled the Soviet Union to dominate top-class chess during that time. Flohr was a famous Czech chess grandmaster of the mid-20th century, he was so famous at that time that even some companies used his name to sell their luxury products. Flohr was also a well-respected chess author, and an International Arbiter.

How 1935 Botvinnik Flohr Reproduced Soviet Chess Set is different from other sets?

This chess set is expertly carved by the instructions of Alan Dewey and our master craftsmen who have years of experience of turning these fine chess sets. photo 11377208_386286928230671_1684619919929076509_n.jpgOne of the great antique chess set restorer 'Alan Dewey' speculated that this (1933) match was an important one for chess and the (soon to be) grandmasters concerned. Even pivotal as it was a time of rising tensions in the west. The use of these slimmer soviet style sets with squat bases (some with contrasting colored finials) is common in the soviet countries and show significant differences to the Jaques type clone sets in common use here in tournaments such as Hastings etc. However he speculated that some at least of these sets especially the carving of the knights were done by the (almost) slave laborers of the Gulag in Siberia!

"So these sets are not only a piece of history but also have political significance"

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

Craftsmanship: Each piece in the set has been meticulously carved, sanded, finished and buff polished by hand to give it a rich long lasting shine.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chess men.

Weights: The set is heavily weighted and so they are pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

Customer Reviews
Rooks Review by Dylan
The rooks in this set are not as good and elegant as the ones in the original set. The copies of the rooks are not good enough and need to improve. (Posted on 10/29/2017)
