Only in-transit damage & cracking replacements will be given.The Birth of the Staunton Pattern Design: Named after Howard Staunton, the unofficial world champion of the time, the first Staunton set was produced by John Jaques of London which was beautiful in its functionality yet easy to be produced in large scale. The pieces were rugged with heavy stable bases which did not tumble easily. The rooks were turned to look solid castles, the pawns were minimalist but refined, the bishops had simple mitres, the tall king was distinguished with a cross finial and the queen with coronet. This functional design of chess pieces was taken very well by chess enthusiasts and it became very popular quickly. Later it became the only design accepted by FIDE for tournaments.
