What's New in Version 3.0: The Dubrovnik chess set celebrates a love story of aesthetics. Some customer’s felt that the knight in our previous repro was not an accurate reproduction, so we heard to our customer’s opinion and respected their verdict by bringing a closest possible knight in our version 3.0. The Dubrovnik chess set is simply gorgeous and exquisitely striking, therefore each piece is carved with meticulous care. Our most magnificent chess set yet takes nearly a week to create. It’s a chess set that is truly like no other.

Features: Reproduced Dubrovnik weighted chess pieces with a 3.7" King and base diameter of 1.5". This set is Double Weighted and the chess pieces have thick green felt on their bases. The dark chess pieces are made in Ebonized boxwood and the lighter chess pieces are made in  Antiqued boxwood

Pieces Weight: 1210 grams (42.68 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%.

Finish Type(Type of Polish): Understand the difference between Lacquer Chess Set and Buff Polish Chess Set from here.

Exquisitely Crafted: Handcrafted in India, these chess pieces exude class and history. Appropriately weighted these pieces are very stable on board and a pleasure to touch and feel. Each piece is meticulously carved and buff polished by hand to give it a rich and long lasting shine. The design, quality and craftsmanship of these chess pieces is unmatched and that is what made them favorite with the greatest chess player of all time, Bobby Fischer. When it comes to pleasure of holding a nicely weighted and crafted chess set, no other chess set comes even close to Dubrovnik Wooden Chess Pieces.

The 1950 Dubrovnik Chess Set:

There used to be a greatest chess player of all time, Robert James "Bobby" Fischer and there used to be one of his all time favorite chess set. It was called "The 1950 Dubrovnik chess set". In a radio interview, Bobby Fischer stated, "This (1950 Dubrovnik chess set) is the best chess set I have ever played on, it is marvellous." Interestingly there seemed to be some thief who loved this chess set even more than Bobby Fisher and Bobby Fishers original chess set was stolen. On Bobby Fishers special request a chess collector provided this chess set for the 1992 Fischer–Spassky rematch held at Sveti Stefan.

1950 Dubrovnik chess set was first seen in the 9th Chess Olympiad organized by the FIDE and the government of Yugoslavia. The Olympiad was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia between August 20 and September 11, 1950. This Olympiad had 84 chess players representing 16 nations who played a total of 480 games.

This chess set was designed without any religious symbols, without the king crown or bishop mitres. The pieces were designed for play and had wide bases and the pieces required a chess board with minimum 55 mm squares. They were green felted but were non weighted.

Approximately 50 chess sets were made, so the original sets are extremely rare and expensive to buy for chess collectors. Chessbazaar presents the reproduction 1950 Dubrovnik chess set where we have made this wonderful chess set available to chess lovers at most affordable prices. We have kept the design of the set as close to the original as possible but we have weighted it to make up for the shortcoming in the original design. This magnificent chess set should be in every serious collector's collection. Get more understanding on this iconic chess set from here.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

Craftsmanship: Cultivating a new level of craftsmanship and artisanal luxury in this version 3.0, we present to you our most exquisite Dubrovnik yet.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chess men.

Recommended Board Size: (1.9"-2.3")/(50mm - 60 mm) square size

Weights: The set is double weighted and so they are pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

Note: Original Dubrovnik chess pieces are non-weighted. Commercially available 1970 chess set (used by Bobby Fischer) design is slightly changed from the actual 1950 Dubrovnik but the difference is not hugely noticeable. The actual 1950 Dubrovnik Olympiad chess set was never sold in any store.
