Customer Reviews
The best chess set I've ever seen or used in India Review by Vamsi Mohan Krishna

This is the best chess set I've ever used. It has amazing finish, board presence, weight, packaging and attention to detail. All if the pieces are hand manufactured in India by Indians in Amritsar as a family tradition for many decades (close to 60 years I think)

About the chess pieces
1. The white pieces are in boxwood and the black pieces are in sheesham or Indian rosewood. This is brown in color with the natural wood grain visible on the pieces.
2. They're satin finished to utmost perfection with a beautiful lustre.
3. The King stands at around 4 inches or 104mm tall. This is within the FIDE tournament regulations of + or - 10% 96mm or 3.75 inches for the King's height.
4. The rest of the pieces are proportionally tall, with incrementally dropping heights from Queen to Bishop to Knight to rook to pawn.
5. The weight of the entire set with the box is 1639gm.
6. The weight of King is 64gm which is perfectly weighted and it doesn't topple even if tipped to a 65 degree angle from the vertical axis. It bounces back upright again with little drama. This is perfect for blitz chess as the speed of play sometimes tends to knock things off. You can pick up a piece and drop it aiming it at a square and it'll fall into it without any effort. Although that takes practice and it can only be done in fast games.
7. The total weight of the set is 1396gm which is including the extra queens. (Yes we get a white and a black Queen extra with the set). This weight in pieces gives a satisfying thud and feel with moving pieces on the board. It can't be explained in words.
8. The Knights are amazingly hand crafted with so much detail that you'll be left gazing at them wondering how they managed to carve all the 4 knights to such close perfection for something that's hand made.
9. All pieces have green felted bottom. It helps in not scratching up the board or the bottom of pieces.

Overall, these pieces will not look out of place in a world chess championship, or a museum or a tournament or just your own display case. It's a thing of beauty just like the game!

Some scope of improvement for pieces
1. This could be a personal opinion but they could've chosen a wood that has less grain for the black pieces... Still it's nonetheless amazing and some might consider the natural wood grain an endearing thing.
2. The felt on the bottom could've been glued a bit more precisely. I'm just nitpicking here. It's difficult to find flaws.
3. The finial on the King's crown is delicate and could break if you drop your king head down first! So take care of your pieces.

About the chess board
1. The board is manufactured in Spain by a company Rechapados Ferrer. They're a premier wood working company with a long tradition of making all kinds of wood veneer items. I'll dare you to find a flaw in the playing surface and you can't find it.
2. Although the board is veneer and not fully solid wooden board, it's so flawless and beautiful that you won't notice it
3. The top surface seems to be coated in lustrous matte finish (probably polyurethane) and this makes the pieces slide like carrom pieces.
3. Board is 21 inches measured diagonally and each square is 55mm. It'll accommodate the pieces with correct proportions. And it complies to FIDE standards for championship matches.
4. The board weighs 2350 gm and is 13mm thick is perfectly flat.

Only flaw in the board is it's bottom is not felted so the veneer might get damaged if not careful when placing on floor or table.

As for packaging... It came so heavily packaged in FedEx courier that if one were to drop it from there FedEx aircraft, it would make a hole in the ground. Took me half hour to unbox each piece. Amazing packaging.

Overall, I paid 8030 for this set during Christmas offer period and I think it's a bargain at the price. The quality that we get for this price is unmatched. The same quality set would probably cost more than 3 times if bought from houseofstaunton site. Or DGT boards that have electronics in them and are official chess board sponsers for all matches. We can afford those pieces or boards.

So this is the closest thing to championship tournament perfection at the price. If cared for this will last longer than I might and will pass down to my children. That's quality and reliability that has no monetary value. (Posted on 12/28/2017)
