The reproduced 1946 Issac Lipnitsky Berlin tournament chess pieces are meticulously carved by our most experienced craftsman in ebonized boxwood. The King proudly stands at 4.0" tall with a base diameter of 1.7". The opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is traditionally used for the white side. The most intriguing thing about this set is the bases of the chessmen, with the king base dia and the rook base dia at 1.7". Even the bell-shaped pawn's base dia is 1.7" which is around 40% more than the traditional 4" king height pawn. The chess pieces are weighted by the iron studs and are double-weighted so that it doesn't tip over easily and are comfortable to slide on the chessboard. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. The chessman has been reproduced in collaboration with Mike Ladzinski.

Issac Lipnitsky (1923-1959) was a Ukrainian Soviet ChessMaster. He was also a chess theoretician and a professional teacher. He was a two-time Ukrainian Chess Champion (1949, 1956).  His best results were at the 18th USSR Championship in 1950  where he scored 11/17 (+8 -3 =6 ) and tied 2nd -4th behind winner Paul Keres.

During Lipnitsky short career, he defeated top Soviet players including Keres, Smyslov, Petrosian, Kotov, Averbakh, Bondarevsky Taimanov, and Geller among others.
Lipnitsky was a high ranking Soviet military officer stationed in Berlin at the end of WW II. It was at this time he organized a chess club in Berlin at the Central Club of the Soviet Military Aviation Group and approached the matter with all seriousness. Tournaments were held at the club in which hundreds of players took part. A seminar on the study of chess theory was also organized, which was conducted for all masters and first category candidate players. In the spring of 1946, the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SVAG) Championship was held for the first time. It was here that Lipnitsky's Berlin Set was introduced. It was a uniquely fascinating set and unlike any Soviet set which suggests it was probably made in Berlin and selected by Lipnitsky for use in his club and tournaments.
