The 1950 Dubrovnik Chess Set:

There used to be a greatest chess player of all time, Robert James "Bobby" Fischer and there used to be one of his all time favorite chess set. It was called "The 1950 Dubrovnik chess set". In a radio interview, Bobby Fischer stated, "This (1950 Dubrovnik chess set) is the best chess set I have ever played on, it is marvellous." Interestingly there seemed to be some thief who loved this chess set even more than Bobby Fisher and Bobby Fishers original chess set was stolen. On Bobby Fishers special request a chess collector provided this chess set for the 1992 Fischer–Spassky rematch held at Sveti Stefan.

1950 Dubrovnik chess set was first seen in the 9th Chess Olympiad organized by the FIDE and the government of Yugoslavia. The Olympiad was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia between August 20 and September 11, 1950. This Olympiad had 84 chess players representing 16 nations who played a total of 480 games.

This chess set was designed without any religious symbols, without the king crown or bishop mitres. The pieces were designed for play and had wide bases and the pieces required a chess board with minimum 55 mm squares. They were green felted but were non weighted.

Approximately 50 chess sets were made, so the original sets are extremely rare and expensive to buy for chess collectors. Chessbazaar presents the reproduction 1950 Dubrovnik chess set where we have made this wonderful chess set available to chess lovers at most affordable prices. We have kept the design of the set as close to the original as possible but we have weighted it to make up for the shortcoming in the original design. This magnificent chess set should be in every serious collector's collection.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

Craftsmanship: Cultivating a new level of craftsmanship and artisanal luxury in this version 2.0, we present to you our most exquisite Dubrovnik yet.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chess men.

Weights: The set is double weighted and so they are pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

Note: Original Dubrovnik chess pieces are non-weighted. Commercially available 1970 chess set (used by Bobby Fischer) design is slightly changed from the actual 1950 Dubrovnik but the difference is not hugely noticeable. The actual 1950 Dubrovnik Olympiad chess set was never sold in any store.

Package Includes : 34 Chessmen(2 extra queens included). chess board NOT included in this sale.

Bobby Fischer was right: it IS marvellous Review by Alexandru Burda

The great chess player Bobby Fischer was right about the Dubrovnik chess set: it IS absolutely marvellous. Playing with it is an experience over the board that no other chess set is able to offer to a player. And the ChessBazaar reproduction is perfectly faithful most of all in offering this unique pleasure that the Dubrovnik chess set offered to other players since it was created 68 years ago.

Regarding craftsmanship, every chess piece is beautifully carved, especially the knights (practically no difference from one to another) and the bishops which do feel very nice when handling. Again as Fischer put it, no rough edges on any of the chess pieces making it for a delightful play. Some minor problems regarding the finishing of the pieces bases, the filing foam protruding outside trough the felt and making the affected pieces wobble. It can be solved by just pushing the foam back and the piece base against a hard plane surface which makes the affected piece stable again. If this does not work, ChessBazaar replaces the faulty pieces although with a new order if the delivery is made by regular postal service, which is not exactly a free replacement.

Regarding the reproduction, the set is closer in design to the Dubrovnik II set than to the 1950 Dubrovnik. Compared with the former, some minor details are missing (for the better actually) on the pawns, the bishops and the rooks. In the same time, the knights are a nice mixture between the styles of the knights from the two original sets (slimer like the Dubrovnik II knight but with a smaller head like the 1950 one). I consider the result to be more beautiful than both of the originals. Practically a new style. The same for the Queen and the bishops. So in my opinion, the ChessBazaar Dubrovnik chess set could be viewed as a new edition of the set in its own right. A Dubrovnik III chess set.

Regarding size, the set sits just perfect on a 55 mm field board, no matter the design or the wood (or material), although I prefer it on a walnut board or on the ”Judith Polgar” board, to add a bit of a historical and modern touch. The pieces are weighted but not to much so the feeling the unweighted originals gave wile playing is preserved with a touch of stability on the board.

All in all, the Dubrovnik is a must have chess set for any player or collector and a set that puts in to shadow any other. Owing it will make one want to play only with it and certainly want to order another one. As I did. It is love at first site, touch and play. Thank you ChessBazaar! :) (Posted on 3/19/2018)
A wonderful reproduction and fantastic feel! Review by Justin

This Dubrovnik set is nicely weighted, not too heavy and not too light either. My favorite pieces are the chunky pawns but the knights are a close second. Very good value.

Only issue is the felt pads were not fully glued onto all the bottoms so I had to finish the job myself. Still, I'm very happy and this set is just as fun to play with as my Luxury House of Staunton Sultan pieces! I will purchase from ChessBazaar again and soon... (Posted on 10/26/2017)
