Reproduced 1849 Staunton Pattern Chess Pieces: Alan Dewey and chessbazaar proudly present the grand dad of all chess sets, the replica of 1849 Staunton Pattern Chess Set. The chess pieces are made in antiqued boxwood and ebony wood. The king is 4.4" high. The chess set comes with 34 pieces including 2 extra queens. This set is Triple Weighted and the chess pieces have thick green felt on their bases.

Named after Howard Staunton, the unofficial world champion of the time, the first Staunton set was produced by John Jaques of London which was beautiful in its functionality yet easy to be produced in large scale. The pieces were rugged with heavy stable bases which did not tumble easily. The rooks were turned to look solid castles, the pawns were minimalist but refined, the bishops had simple mitre, the tall king was distinguished with a cross finial and the queen with coronet. This functional design of chess pieces was taken very well by chess enthusiasts and it became very popular quickly. Later it became the only design accepted by FIDE for tournaments. There are many variations in the design available now but most of these have been derived from the original Staunton design.

Design & Quality: Handcrafted in India, these chess pieces exude class and history. Appropriately weighted these pieces are very stable on board and a pleasure to touch and feel. Each piece is meticulously carved and buff polished by hand to give it a rich and long lasting shine. The design, quality, and craftsmanship of these chess pieces is unmatched and that is what made them favorite of the masses. To make the 1849 repro chess set what it is, our artisans take more than a week to a carve a single chess set. The result of this hard work of these master craftsmen is a truly wonderful design and a master piece which any connoisseur will admire.

The original 1849 antique chess sets are selling at thousands of dollars a set but that is not every what every chess collector can spend on a hobby. chessbazaar and Alan Dewey worked closely to take out this repro design so that every chess enthusiast can buy and admire the beauty of this chess set.

King side stamping: King side rook and knight have been stamped in both boxwood side and ebony side. A crown emblem is etched on the foreheads of knights and on top of the turrets of the rooks which stands on the side of the kings on both sides. The main concept behind the king side stamping is to identify and differentiate their positioning on to the king's side of the board. Another reason for using king stamping is that the rooks and knights are often designated by being the "queen's knight", the "king's rook", etc. The kingside bishop does not need any such identification as they move in their respective colors only.

Our team of expert carvers and Vikramjit Singh, founder of chessbazaar have closely worked with Mr.  Alan Dewey to bring out this accurate reproduction of 1849 chess set.

In-Box items: Retail package consists of 34 chessmen, 2 extra queens included, Numbered ownership certificate. chess board NOT included in this sale.

Literally Museum Quality!! Review by mark

I'd been reading about many of the more expensive 1849/1851 and other variants of the classic Staunton sets that are recommended on my chess forum.Admittedly, I was a bit reluctant to go for this one,as some collectors feel the knights are not as faithful as the originals. One look ate these and I was thrilled beyond belief!!......I FAR prefer these knights to the ones I've seen in the more traditional offerings.I know CB now offers truer repros of the knights, but I still prefer these masterful knights to all others.

Honestly, this set belongs in a museum,as it is flawless and beyond gorgeous.....Price-wise a steal in my opinion. (Posted on 3/1/2017)

I just received the 4.4 in 1849 repro. This is a magnificent set for the price. Added bonus was free shipping that was too fast to believe! I have an original 4.4 1849 and this repro set is 95% the quality and workmanship for 1/300 th the cost. Buy it now, don't even think twice!
You will need a bigger board as this set looks crowded on a normal size board. (Posted on 2/13/2017)
