Reproduced 1849 Staunton Pattern Chess Pieces : Alan Dewey and chessbazaar proudly present the grand dad of all chess sets in 3.75" king size, replica of 1849 Staunton Pattern Chess Set. The chess pieces are made in antiqued box wood and ebony wood. The king is 3.75" high(Tournament Size). The chess set comes with 34 pieces including 2 extra queens. This set is heavily Weighted and the chess pieces have thick green felt on their bases.

Named after Howard Staunton, the unofficial world champion of the time, the first Staunton set was produced by John Jaques of London which was beautiful in its functionality yet easy to be produced in large scale. The pieces was rugged with heavy stable bases which did not tumble easily. The rooks were turned to look solid castles, the pawns were minimalist but refined, the bishops had simple mitres, the tall king was distinguished with a cross finial and the queen with coronet. This functional design of chess pieces was taken very well by chess enthusiasts and it became very popular quickly. Later it became the only design accepted by FIDE for tournaments. There are many variations in the design available now but most of these have been derived from the original Staunton design.

Design & Quality : Handcrafted in India, these chess pieces exude class and history. Appropriately weighted these pieces are very stable on board and a pleasure to touch and feel. Each piece is meticulously carved and buff polished by hand to give it a rich and long lasting shine. The design, quality and craftsmanship of these chess pieces is unmatched and that is what made them favorite of the masses. To make the 1849 repro chess set what it is, our artisans take more than a week to a carve a single chess set. The result of this hard work of these master craftsmen is a truly wonderful design and a master piece which any connoisseur will admire.

The original 1849 antique chess sets are selling at thousands of dollars a set but that is not every what every chess collector can spend on a hobby. chessbazaar and Alan Dewey worked closely to take out this repro design so that every chess enthusiast can buy and admire the beauty of this chess set.

King side stamping: King side rook and knight has been stamped in both box wood side and ebony side. A crown emblem is etched on the foreheads of knights and on top of the turrets of the rooks which stands on the side of the kings on both sides. The main concept behind the king side stamping is to identify and differenciate their positioning on to the king's side of the board. Another reason for using king stamping is that the rooks and knights are often designated by being the "queen's knight", the "king's rook", etc. The king side bishop does not need any such identification as they move in their respective colors only.

Our team of expert carvers and Vikramjit Singh, founder of chessbazaar have closely worked with Mr.  Alan Dewey to bring out this accurate reproduction of 1849 chess set.
