After the success of 1849 chess set1851 chess set and 1935 Botvinnik Flohr Reproduced Chess Setchessbazaar™ is proud to introduce "1880s-90s Circa Lasker Staunton Pattern Antique Chess Set", featuring the finest aspects of Staunton pattern. This chess set features chessmen that are crafted with a combination of ebony wood and box wood. The King proudly stands at 3.74(Tournament Size) inches and its base is a robust 1.6 inches. The dark chess pieces are made of ebony wood. It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade genuine ebony wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine.

Weight: 1100 grams approx (38.80 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%.

The opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. Pieces have unique rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen for smooth movement on the chess board. The Knights are well-reproduced and represent the highest grade of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer.

The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique collar rings and unique angular miter cut on the bishops. All chess pieces have a wide base History: This Lasker Staunton Pattern Chess set was produced by the legendary company Jaques of London in 1880. Jaques of London company was known for their well-finished quality chess pieces, they introduced their first chess set in the fall of 1849. 1849 Staunton chess set was beautiful in its functionality yet easy to be produced in large scale. Shortly after the 1849 chess set became popular Jaques of London launched a new chess set in 1851 which also became an instant hit among the chess enthusiasts. Year after year Jaques of London produced many exceptional chess sets. Lasker chess set was produced between 1880 and 1890. The pieces were rugged with stable bases which did not tumble easily. The rooks were turned to look solid castles, the pawns were minimalist but refined, the bishops had simple angular miters, the king was distinguished with a cross finial and the queen with a simple ball. This functional design of chess pieces was taken very well by chess enthusiasts and it became very popular quickly. This reproduction exemplifies a perfect combination of class and history.

Why Reproduced Lasker Chess Set? The original Lasker Staunton chess set in playable condition is very very hard to find and may cost tens of thousands of dollars if available. Our Lasker Replica is a humble try to bring this legendary design to life and to let chess enthusiasts experience the game with this beautiful chess set which was not possible hitherto.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

Craftsmanship: The carving and the design of the knight are quite spectacular, look closely at the eyes, nostrils, teeth and, craftsmanship around the mane. The design of the other pieces is also highly outstanding that allows the set to truly stand out. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade ebony wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine. Superb size proportioning from king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship in all the pieces.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.

Weights: The set is heavily weighted and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

Package Includes: 34 Chessmen(2 extra queens included), Chessboard NOT included in this sale.
