This peerless 1904 Cambridge Springs International Congress Tournament Chess Set in Staunton style is made up of ebonized boxwood and antiqued boxwood. The King proudly stands at 4 inches and its base is a robust 1.7 inches. This is a historic design featuring the first of it's kind unique king finial. Wider base and superb size proportioning from the king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship in all the pieces. The dark chess pieces are made up of ebonized wood & the opposing pieces are made up of antiqued boxwood. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. Thick green felt which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen gives you the smooth movement and cushioned feel on the chess board. The knights are well-crafted and exhibit the sky-high level of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer. Pieces are expertly carved in India and heavily weighted for prodigious hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board.

History: This special Staunton style chess set was made for the 1904 Cambridge Springs International Chess Congress Tournament. It was the first major international chess tournament in America in the 20th century which was held on April 25, 1904, at one of the greatest hotels of all time "The Hotel Rider" in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. Some of the famous chess players who played from this wonderful chess set: Emanuel Lasker 35, Berlin – The reigning World Chess Champion, Mikhail Chigorin 53, St. Petersburg – Champion of Russia, Harry Pillsbury 31, Philadelphia – Winner of the greatest tournament of the nineteenth century, Hastings 1895, & Jackson Showalter 43, Georgetown, KY – Six-time United States Chess Champion. The thing that made this tournament more prominent was the participation of reigning World Champion Emanuel Lasker, who had not played a tournament since 1900 and would not play again until 1909. It was a single-round-robin tournament where each chess player would play one game against the other players, for a total of 15 games. The time control was 30 moves in 2 hours, then 15 moves per hour.

Craftsmanship: The carving and turning the quality of the knight are quite spectacular. The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique collar rings and elegant curves. There are 4 cuts in the turrets of the rook. The pawns have a wide base which adds another interesting dimension to the set. The design of the other pieces is also highly commended, that allow the set to truly stand out. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine. Each chessmen is carefully handcrafted in India with dainty details. The design, quality, and craftsmanship of these chess pieces are comparable to the original chess sets that are sold for $1500+ by other retailers.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

New Antique Finish Process: The new antique finish is accomplished through an innovative four-step process of color and rotational 3-D polishing for a uniform finish. This new antique finish even prevents pieces from cracks and splits.

Weights: The set is heavily weighted with iron studs and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.

Excellent reproduction Review by Manfred
Kudos to CB and every single person who was involved in reproducing this historic 1904 Cambridge set. The quality especially the antique finish is truly remarkable and it seems that CB has upped their game by offering this repro at an unbelievable price. Alan B, the brain behind this repro has rightly said in his review and I hereby quote, "My own vintage 4” chessmen are on loan for the Staunton Standard exhibition in St.Louis, but I wish that these chessmen could have been part of that exhibit, they are that good!". I do posses chess sets from other vendors like HOS, OS and I must say that CB has superseded them in terms of quality w.r.t the price. Well done! (Posted on 9/7/2018)
