Reproduced 1940 Soviet Club Chess Set's dark pieces are made of genuine Ebony wood and the light pieces are made of Antiqued Boxwood. The King proudly stands at 4.05" tall with a base diameter of 1.73". The dark chess pieces are made of genuine ebony wood. It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade genuine ebony wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine.

The opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. Pieces have unique rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen for smooth movement on the chess board. The Knights are well-reproduced and represent the highest grade of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer.

The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique collar rings and elegant curves on the knights. All chess pieces have a wide base which adds another interesting dimension to the set.

History: This marvelous chess set made in USSR was never used in any tournament, never reproduced. Some chess collectors even believe that this set was used for photos only in Moscow Club, at best in 1940 USSR Championship.

Chess and its Russian/Soviet connection: Chess is one of the most popular games in the Soviet Union and there is one interesting fact that most of the world chess champions were citizens of the Soviet Union. The period from 1993 to 2000 the world chess champions were almost Russians. From the early days, chess has been a central feature of Soviet history and culture from the middle ages onwards, resulting in a great range of chess sets from various times and zones. Click here to see our full range of Russian/Soviet chess sets. Chess is considered one of the most interesting, exciting and educational games in Soviet. Now a day's Russians also use chess as a training concentration.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

New Antique Finish Process: The new antique finish is accomplished through an innovative four-step process of color and rotational 3-D polishing for a uniform finish. This new antique finish even prevents pieces from cracks and splits.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.

Weights: The set is heavily weighted and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

Ownership Certificate: Chess collectors, chess players or whosoever purchases this work of art will also get ownership certificate which includes the details such as set no, purchase date, owner name etc.

Great job Review by Brendon

I really like the antique finish that is put on the boxwood. It stand out from the other sets I own. I opted for the laquer finish and I’m pleased that I did. The laquer looks great on the ebony (almost looks fake) makes it look like the polished keys on a piano. My only small critique is that the knight feels lighter than the other pieces. Doesn’t detract during play, just noticeable. (Posted on 10/12/2018)

The 1940 Soviet Club Set is truly a set not be missed in my collection. Because Chess Bazaar has once again amaze me this fantastic Soviet Set reproduction. It is truly a player choice set and a nice display set to be in every household to be owned. The knight especially was perfectly crafted looks like the original. The weight of the individual pieces was fairly treated to give a nice balance during blitz play. (Posted on 8/25/2018)
