Special thanks to "Chuck Grau" for his exceptional efforts in making this dream chess set in white color a reality & we'd also like to thank George Rosado, who convinced us to make this impeccable reproduction in stunning ivory white color.

chessbazaar proudly presents you the reproduced 1940 Soviet club chess set in an eye-catching ivory white color. Dark pieces are made of genuine ebony wood and the light pieces are made of ivory white boxwood. The King proudly stands at 4.05" tall with a base diameter of 1.73". The dark chess pieces are made of genuine ebony wood. It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade genuine ebony wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine.

The opposing pieces are made of ivory white(boxwood). Boxwood is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free Chuck Grau's 1940 Phenomenal Soviet Championshipextra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. Pieces have unique rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen for smooth movement on the chess board. The Knights are well-reproduced and represent the highest grade of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer. Reproduced 1940 Soviet Club Chess Set is simply gorgeous and exquisitely striking in white color, therefore each piece is carved with meticulous care. Our most magnificent chess set yet takes nearly a week to create. It’s a chess set that is truly like no other.

Craftsmanship: The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique collar rings and elegant curves on the knights. We then polished them in high gloss lacquer which gives the chess pieces a smooth shiny surface. The set is entirely handmade in India and weighted for prodigious hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. All chess pieces have a wide base which adds another interesting dimension to the set.

History: This marvelous chess set made in USSR was never used in any tournament, never reproduced. Some chess collectors even believe that this set was used for photos only in Moscow Club, at best in 1940 USSR Championship.

Chess and its Russian/Soviet connection: Chess is one of the most popular games in the Soviet Union and there is one interesting fact that most of the world chess champions were citizens of the Soviet Union. The period from 1993 to 2000 the world chess champions were almost Russians. From the early days, chess has been a central feature of Soviet history and culture from the middle ages onwards, resulting in a great range of chess sets from various times and zones. Click here to see our full range of Russian/Soviet chess sets. Chess is considered one of the most interesting, exciting and educational games in Soviet. Now a day's Russians also use chess as a training concentration.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

New Ivory White(boxwood): Reproduced 1940 Soviet Club Chess Set simply looks gorgeous and exquisitely striking in white color, therefore each piece is carved with meticulous care. Our most magnificent chess set yet takes nearly a week to create. It’s a chess set that is truly like no other.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.

Weights: The set is heavily weighted and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

Ownership Certificate: Chess collectors, chess players or whosoever purchases this work of art will also get ownership certificate which includes the details such as set no, purchase date, owner name etc.

I don't own many Soviet chess set but I rate this one as one of my best I have purchased from Chessbazaar. Thank you Vikramjit Singh for granting your design team to help make this custom set I requested and for humbling me by mentioning and having accredited Chuck Grau and myself in influencing the making of this set to be available to players and collectors alike. Superb carvings of the knights and equally impeccable smooth lathe turning of all the pieces in the set. The finish is absolutely astonishing and very close if not spot on to the original set showcased in archive promotional photos of the 1940 Soviet championships. Nicely weighted and outstanding lacquered finishes on both the ebony and white gloss boxwood pieces. I may have to add a few more Soviet era sets from Chessbazar's line of Russian line to add to my inventory. Thank you Mayank and the design team for all of your help and courtesy emails. With my Best regards,Jorge Rosado. (Posted on 5/11/2018)
