Reproduced 1960s Ultimate Russian World Chess Championship (Soviet Era) Chess Set in Staunton style is made up of ebony wood and boxwood. The King proudly stands at 4.48 inches and its base is a robust 1.73 inches. Wide base and superb size proportioning from the king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship work. Along with the intricate craftsmanship, what makes this reproduction so unique is how it feels in your hand. The set is entirely handmade in India and weighted for prodigious hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board.

It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional. For superior protection against scratches and dirt, we've shielded the pieces with buff-polish instead of lacquer finish. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade ebony wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long lasting shine.

The opposing pieces are made of natural boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces have billiard board green felt pads on their bases which give you the smooth movement on the chess board.

History: This historically significant design was used in the many World Chess Championships held in the former Soviet Union( i.e. 1960, 1961, 1963, 1966, 1969 ). These includes, but may not have been limited to, the Tal, Botvinnik matches, the Petrosian-Botvinnik match, and the Spassky-Petrosian matches. There were also some speculations that this design was used as early as in 1948. It seems to have been used as late as the first three Karpov-Kasparov matches.

Design & Quality:

Appropriately weighted these pieces are very stable on board and a pleasure to touch and feel. Each piece is meticulously carved and polished by hand to give it a rich and long lasting shine. The design, quality, and craftsmanship of these chess pieces are unmatched and that is what made them favorite of the masses. The result of this hard work of these master craftsmen is a truly wonderful design and a masterpiece which any connoisseur will admire.

The original chess set of this design is very hard to find and they are selling at thousands of dollars, but that is not every what every chess collector can spend on a hobby. chessbazaar worked very hard to take out this repro design at very affordable price without compromising on quality so that every chess enthusiast can buy and admire the beauty of this chess set.

Customer Reviews
Product of outstanding craftsmanship for the low asking price. Review by LucasM

Awesome product in the whole. Some minor finishing details - tiny marks on white pieces, as if burned - and some weight inconsistencies reaching up to 10 grams difference between white and black knights. Otherwise a superb quality set, even better than in the pictures. Portly and magnificent king and knights... Very delicate and feminine queen. The quality and value greatly surpass the price. I'm happy. (Posted on 7/18/2017)

A very good reproduction, especially the knights, but this set should be offered in a black stained version - as close to the original as possible! No need for ebony (a nature protected wood); the Russians did not have it. (Posted on 6/3/2017)
