Special thanks to "Mike Ladzinski" for his phenomenal efforts in making this dream chess set a reality.

We are pleased to announce the reproduction of 1973 Petropolis 1979 Interzonal Tournament Chess Set. This very special heirloom quality Staunton chess set is exquisitely made from Sheesham and natural boxwood. Just like our Mustang series, the King comes with two beauteous king finials(each side) & proudly stands at 4.3/4.5 inches and its base is robust 1.6 inches. Changing the king finials is a quick and easy job. This is the reproduction design featuring the magnificently robust and distinctive knight.

Note: No glue work is required to swap the king finials.

The dark chess pieces are made of sheesham wood and the opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. King, Queens, Bishops, and Pawns have unique rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen for smooth movement on the chess board. The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique collar rings and elegant curves. The Knights are well-reproduced and represent the highest grade of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer.

For a fine uniform finish, we've shielded the pieces with buff-polish instead of lacquer finish. This also ensures the surface is hardy and resistant to scratches & dirt.

Design Inspiration: A very special Staunton style set was made for the 1973 Petropolis Interzonal Chess Tournament held in Brazil. The set featured robust pieces with 4.5" kings and impressive uniquely different hands carved Knights. It's fitting that  Brazilian player Henrique Mecking won the event. A similar style "Petropolis" set was also used in the 1979 Rio de Janeiro Interzonal tournament also held in Brazil. Robert Huebner, Lajos Portish, and Tigran Petrosian tied for first place honors. ChessBazaar has taken the best elements of both Interzonal tournament sets and introduces their "1973 Petropolis 1979 Interzonal Tournament Set reproduction.Mike Ladzinski

Craftsmanship: Did you notice? Knights have handmade lines for an elegant look. The carving and the design of the knights are quite spectacular. The design of the other pieces is also highly outstanding that allows the set to truly stand out. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine. Superb size proportioning from king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship in all the pieces.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

Weights: The set is heavily weighted with iron studs and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.

Package Includes: 34 Chessmen(2 extra queens & finials included), chess board & storage box are NOT included in this sale.

Disclaimer: Product color may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings.

Caution: These chess pieces are neither waterproof nor UV-resistant.

I have been collectors of old chess sets and clocks for many years. I have never seen such a beautiful magnificent set ever produced. Many thanks to Gurpreet, Vik and the ChessBazaar team for making their numerous effort and man hour to make thus OUTSTANDING historic Petropolis set. This set combines the best elements of the Petropolis sets used at the 1973 and 1979 Interzonal Tournaments. Each interzonal had a different King's finial. This amazing reproduction comes with both finials. The cone-shaped finial was used in the 1973 Interzonal sets and the cross finial in the 1979 Interzonal sets. Its a fantastic playing set for tournaments and home play as well as a great set for speed and blitz games. It is strongly recommended to have it in your collection. If you ever own it means you own both 1973 and 1979 Interzonal Tournament. Similarly, I wish to extend my gratitude to my greatest chess collector afficianador Mr Mike John Ladzinski for his initiative and kind suggestion. (Posted on 8/10/2018)
