Presenting you a chess set that has no equal, reproduced Richard Whitty antique chess set. Dark pieces are made of genuine Ebony wood and the light pieces are made of Antiqued Boxwood. The King proudly stands at 3.75" tall with a base diameter of 1.65". The dark chess pieces are made of genuine ebony wood. It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade genuine ebony wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine.

Weight: 1750 grams approx (61.72 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%.

The opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. Pieces have unique rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen for smooth movement on the chess board. The Knights are well-reproduced and represent the highest grade of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer.

The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique collar rings and unique angular miter cut on the bishops. All chess pieces have a wide base which adds another interesting dimension to the set.

History: Richard Whitty was one of the greatest chess carvers of all time. He worked in the John Jaques factory which was in London and carved some spectacular chess sets. Though Richard Whitty carved many chess sets but this design had no match. In 1870 he started his own business where he fervid his entire life & manufactured some other games too.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

New Antique Finish Process: The new antique finish is accomplished through an innovative four-step process of color and rotational 3-D polishing for a uniform finish. This new antique finish even prevents pieces from cracks and splits.

Craftsmanship: The carving and the design of the knight are quite spectacular, look closely at the eyes, nostrils, teeth and, craftsmanship around the mane. The design of the other pieces is also highly outstanding that allows the set to truly stand out. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade ebony wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine. Superb size proportioning from king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship in all the pieces. The original Richard Whitty Chess Sets are very rare and selling at thousands of dollars a set but that is not what every chess collector can spend on a hobby.

A new kind of king side stamping: King side rook and knight has been stamped on both boxwood side and ebony side. Instead of crown emblem, a small dot is etched on the foreheads of knights and on top of the turrets of the rooks, just like the original Richard Whitty chess sets. Stamped pieces stands on the side of the kings on both sides. The main concept behind the king side stamping is to identify and differentiate their positioning on to the king's side of the board. Another reason for using king stamping is that the rooks and knights are often designated by being the "queen's knight", the "king's rook", etc. The king side bishop does not need any such identification as they move in their respective colors only.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.

Weights: The set is heavily weighted and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.
