The Antique 19th Century Early Staunton Chess Set is exquisitely handcrafted in Ebony & Antiqued Boxwood. The king is 3.38 inches high and its base is a robust 1.6 inches. The chess set comes with 34 pieces including 2 extra queens.

The dark chess pieces are made of ebony wood. It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional.

The opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and heavily weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. King, Queens, Bishops, and Pawns have unique collar rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base of each chess men for smooth movement on the chess board. The knights are well-crafted and represent the highest grade of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer.

History: This antique chess set was produced in early 19th Century. The set was beautiful in its functionality yet easy to be produced in large scale. The pieces were rugged with heavy stable bases which did not tumble easily. The rooks were turned to look solid castles, the pawns were minimalist but refined, the bishops had simple mitres. The design of the set was somewhat similar to 1849 chess set. There are many variations in the design available now but most of these have been derived from the original Staunton design.

Craftsmanship: The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially on the knight. The carving and the design of the knight are quite spectacular, look closely at the eyes, nostrils, teeth and, craftsmanship around the mane. The design of the other pieces is also highly outstanding that allows the set to truly stand out. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade ebony wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine. Superb size proportioning from king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship in all the pieces.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.

Weights: The set is heavily weighted and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

King side stamping: King side rook and knight has been stamped on both box wood side and ebony side. A crown emblem is etched on the foreheads of knights and on top of the turrets of the rooks which stands on the side of the kings on both sides. The main concept behind the king side stamping is to identify and differentiate their positioning on to the king's side of the board. Another reason for using king stamping is that the rooks and knights are often designated by being the "queen's knight", the "king's rook", etc. The king side bishop does not need any such identification as they move in their respective colors only.

In-Box items: Retail package consists of 34 chessmen, 2 extra queens included. chess board NOT included in this sale.

Excellent Review by TVEP
Bought on sale. Very nice classic Staunton pieces. Due to the wide bases, they are super stable. Also because of the wide bases, I feel that 57 mm board is a perfect size, but 55 mm works. Looks better in real life than on pictures. I only wish that the white pieces were available in natural finish since I am not too fond of antique finish. I prefer my pieces to age naturally. A true tribute to 19th Century Classical Staunton Chess model Review by Radu
Have recently discovered Chesbazaar.com. I can say Chesbazaar is a serious and modern enterprise who operates a very good working platform, from the manufacture to customer contact and shipping to the end buyers.
To me, it looks like a company that is constantly evolving.
After much consideration, I have ordered The Antique 19th Century Early Staunton Chess Set in Ebony & Antiqued Boxwood with King Side Stamping - 3.4" King. I took advantage of the October sale and I got a very good price. The delivery time (from India to Romania) as stated on their site was very well respected and items were carefully packed. The package arrived straight to my door in Bucharest without any problems.
Pieces look great, very well machined, knights finely carved. Eyes, ears, teeth, nostrils, typical Staunton cuts are all well done. Well-balanced design. The proportions between pieces were mindfully kept. I don’t like, for instance, chess sets were rooks (towers) – which are strong pieces in the game – are too small compared to knights and bishops, almost resembling pawns (like in some ‘French’ sets). Pieces have large bases. I even checked on the extra ebony queen to see how the weight was laid. I removed the green felt and then I scratched away a plaster/cement layer to reveal the weight which looks like good old led. Excellent! And the ebony is genuine too!
Both the boxwood (for the white pieces) and the ebony (for the black) used for this set are quality wood.
I'm very happy with this purchase. I will surely buy again from Chessbazaar, I already have a couple of other chess sets saved at Favorites. (Posted on 11/9/2018)
