To make the Dubrovnik chess set what it is, our artisans take more than two days to a carve a single chess set.

We have incorporated the following changes in design as per the demand of our buyers and collectors.

- The chess pieces come with a bigger base size.

- There are 5 cuts in the turrets of the rook, depicting 5 regions of Croatia.

The 1950 Dubrovnik Chess Set:

There used to be a greatest chess player of all time, Robert James "Bobby" Fischer and there used to be one of his all time favorite chess set. It was called "The 1950 Dubrovnik chess set". In a radio interview, Bobby Fischer stated, "This (1950 Dubrovnik chess set) is the best chess set I have ever played on, it is marvellous." Interestingly there seemed to be some thief who loved this chess set even more than Bobby Fisher and Bobby Fishers original chess set was stolen. On Bobby Fishers special request a chess collector provided this chess set for the 1992 Fischer–Spassky rematch held at Sveti Stefan.

1950 Dubrovnik chess set was first seen in the 9th Chess Olympiad organized by the FIDE and the government of Yugoslavia. The Olympiad was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia between August 20 and September 11, 1950. This Olympiad had 84 chess players representing 16 nations who played a total of 480 games.

This chess set was designed without any religious symbols, without the king crown or bishop mitres. The pieces were designed for play and had wide bases and the pieces required a chess board with minimum 55 mm squares. They were green felted but were non weighted.

Approximately 50 chess sets were made, so the original sets are extremely rare and expensive to buy for chess collectors. Chessbazaar presents the reproduction 1950 Dubrovnik chess set where we have made this wonderful chess set available to chess lovers at most affordable prices. We have kept the design of the set as close to the original as possible but we have weighted it to make up for the shortcoming in the original design.

This magnificent chess set should be in every serious collector's collection.

Note: Original Dubrovnik chess pieces are non-weighted. Commercially available 1970 chess set (used by Bobby Fischer) design is slightly changed from the actual 1950 Dubrovnik but the difference is not hugely noticeable. The actual 1950 Dubrovnik Olympiad chess set was never sold in any store.

Package Includes : 34 Chessmen(2 extra queens included). chess board NOT included in this sale.

Outstanding Dubrovnik 4" Crimson Stain Set Review by mickey ladz
As a serious collector of Staunton chess sets, I was quite happy with ChessBazaar's latest addition to its fabulous Dubrovnik series. The 4"Crimson Stain Dubrovnik. . This set is a winner in all respects. . The inclusion of wider base pieces looks great. Pieces are well proportioned and are visually pleasing exuding a wonderful board presence. The striking color of the crimson stain is unbelievably beautiful and you have to see the crimson pieces in person to really appreciate them. I also have ChessBazaar's 3.6" Crimson stain. Every collector should have the crimson Dubrovnik set in both 3.6" and 4" versions. I want to operationally thank Vik, Sapna and the ChessBazaar team for making the 4" Dubrovnik in the crimson stain. Keep up the good work and would like to see the crimson stain offered in more of your sets. (Posted on 2/17/2015)
Wonderful ! Review by al
This is my first order to Chessbazaar and I am very pleased.

The set is wonderful : nice weight, gorgeous color (like in the pictures on the site), and most of all, a lot of style !
I like the round and solid look and the very distinctive king (with no cross) and bishop (with a touch of opposite color)
The delivery was fast (4 days) and the pieces were individually wrapped, with a lot of protection.
It looks great on a 2.2" board.
I had some problems with colors during the first days : just touching the red pieces leaves little red stains on my fingers... But after 3 days in the air, the color is now stabilized (Note : I ordered the set the very first day it was online)
All the people who have seen it so far said it was gorgeous.

I definitely recommend this set.

Now, for those who complained this set is not "the original": first you have to know there are 2 main versions of the Dubrovnik :

- The original Dubrovnik ("Dubrovnik I") set was made by sculptor Poček in 1949. The pieces were unweighted. Only 50 sets were made. You can see one on Youtube.
It was designed for the 9th olympiad in 1950 (with Pirc and Najdorf, but not Fischer). Fischer encountered this set in a tournament in 1958, and later proclaimed as his favorite.
An original 1950 set were found and used in the 1992 Spassky-Fischer rematch, to Fischer request.
As far as I know, Fischer never owned a "Dubrovnik I".

- In the sixties the Dubrovnik was redesigned by cartoonist Maurović and master craftsman Jakovljevič. Here comes the "Dubrovnik II".
Only details were changed, most notably the knight.
Fischer bought a "Dubrovnik II" set in 1970 in Zagreb, and used it a lot as you can see in MANY pictures and videos.

(Source : Izmet Fekali website)

This set is not a replica of the first Dubrovnik of 1950, it is a replica of the "redesigned Dubrovnik" owned by Bobby Fischer.
(Although it is a real Dubrovnik, Chessbazaar should remove "1950" in the name of the set.)

In my opinion the new version of the Dubrovnik is superior : for instance, the knight is more coherent to the rest of the set. This version is even better in my view : slightly bigger (4") and nicer colors (cream and crimson red)

Just make your own opinion and compare the 1950 olympiad original (search "Original Dubrovnik 1950 chess set" on youtube), Fischer's set ("fischer dubrovnik 1970" on youtube) and this version. (Posted on 2/16/2015)
