Incredible Reproduction

This chess set is my first purchase at Chessbazaar. The chess set arrived in good condition and on time. The pieces are very well made and feel sturdy

Too light and too otange

Bought this set from them on Amazon. They do not fell as if they are weighted at all and the antique finish is just too orange. Not like patina on wood at all…would not buy again.

I consider this a fair review, a 4 star isn't a fault here.

I purchased this set a week ago and I'm seriously impressed on several levels.\nFirstly\nI've purchased chess pieces from several indian sellers directly in the past and I just cannot fault Chess Bazaar, they really are hands down the best seller of Chess pieces. Not just in terms of quality (which I'll explain below) but also when it comes to customer service.....they excel !. They are 5 star in terms of ease of ordering, payments, speed of processing and shipping. It's gotten to the point where I just don't waste time dealing with other sellers,. Chess Bazaar is my ""go to' chess piece supplier. I would recommend them to anyone without a second thought. Cudo's to them where other sellers don't even come close to their level of service. Hopefully I don't have to change that opinion if I ever need to return a faulty piece, but with Chess Bazaar I'm sure they will back up their product.\nComing from me that's a big deal, I never spend time doing reviews, but they do deserve the praise.\nSecondly \nAfter buying several sets directly or indirectly (ebay) from them the quality of the pieces are exceptional. This set is no exception, The weighting of the set is a little light for my usual preferred playing set. I look beyond that because this set just is perfect in terms of playing ""feel"" and visual appeal. I ordered the Buff finish and can't fault it. Every piece (I really do mean EVERY piece is identical, I can't find any issues. The pieces feel 'chunky in the hand and are a perfect shape. I usually play my preferred size of 3.75"" but this set has turned me into a convert. It's one of the few sets that I actually love to play a game and get that 'chess is soooo cool' vibe. (you know what I'm talking about).. The Queens are Kings have an unusual shape that the website pics don't really do them justice. On the board they work so well. \nI have given only 4 stars on the pricing issue for the simple reason that their prices are a little steep. In fairness though, the quality has always 'exceeeded' my expectations. . A buyer should weight up the pros and cons of price.....me personally, I'll pay the prices simply because Chess Bazaar consistently deliver top quality pieces.\nWhatever Chess Bazaar's formula is, don't stop doing it, it's working. And the chess world is all the better for it for players and collectors alike.\nHigh praise....and well deserved !

Quickly Becoming One of My Favorites

What I like best about these Chessmen is I like each piece. Usually, when buying Chessmen, you really like one or two pieces (the knights most often) and then you tolerate the other pieces that make up the set. With these Chessmen I think every piece is handsome - the short stout Rooks, the pedestaled Knights, the Spiked King, the elegant Lady, her Majesty the Queen, even the lowly pawns go perfectly with its teammates. I will play with these Chessmen often.

Incredible Reproduction

This set was perfectly crafted and is top notch. The pieces seem large for their stated size, and look really good on a board anywhere from 2.25"" to 2.5"" (or 55mm-60mm), though a strict calculation from the stated king base width of 1.73"" indicates that a 2.25"" square size board is appropriate. I would have preferred ebony rather than ebonized for the price, but it all depends on the current discount offered. Probably the original sets were either painted or ebonized and not true ebony (just guessing). It is an excellent reproduction of the unique set for the first major American international chess tournament of the 20th century, at Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, which took place in the Hotel Rider resort.

This chess set is my first purchase at Chessbazaar. The chess set arrived in good condition and on time. The pieces are very well made and feel sturdy. They are of a decent size and proportions - fit for serious play between serious players or can be enjoyed as a piece of decent craftsmanship. \nAfter several disappointing experiences with other chess merchants, I found the right one. Highly recommended!

A Wonderful Vintage American Set

This is an extremely accurate and flawless reproduction of the Cambridge Springs 1904 set. Chess Bazaar is the best when it comes to providing high-quality and accurate looking vintage sets.

Absolutely Lovely, Unique ""One-Off"" Staunton-Style Chess Set

This set was especially designed for the famous 1904 tournament in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Many of the greatest players of the time were competing in that tournament (Marshall - who won, Lasker, Chigorin, Mieses, Pillsbury, Janowski). No surprise they created a special set for that singular event. Chessbazaar's reproduction, from old photos and sketches, is very close to the original, expect maybe for the knights - which is all for the better, CB's are more beautiful. I would have bought this set earlier, but had my reservations about it being available with ebonized boxwood only. Maybe CB should consider making this style in rosewood and padauk, too. For the time being, I'm happy with this version - and I can wholly recommend to get the lacquered one! The set is moderately weighted (King: 60g; Queen: 52g; Bishop: 40g; Knight: 49g; Rook: 45g; Pawn: 24g). As usual, delivery was lighting fast (ordered Friday, shipped Saturday, with delivery in Germany on Monday) and very secure. If you're considering a ""different"" Staunton-style set, don't hesitate: Choose this one. The antique varnish (yellow-orange) works particularly well with the glossy option!

Great chess set

The 1904 Cambridge Springs chess set is a joy to have! The look of the antiqued and ebonized pieces is excellent. The proportion of the pieces is just right. This set is great to play with, and to admire, and captures the spirit of the 1904 tournament. Nowhere else could a person buy this set, and at such a good price.

Beautiful Reproduction

For the price, you can't possibly be disappointed with this Cambridge Springs set. Yes, the pieces are quirky and unusual. But the history of this tournament makes it a treasure for those who appreciate the moment in time and chess history it represents. Plus the pieces are quite beautiful in their own unique way and are very stout and well carved. I am excited to have it in my chess collection.

Excellent reproduction

Kudos to CB and every single person who was involved in reproducing this historic 1904 Cambridge set. The quality especially the antique finish is truly remarkable and it seems that CB has upped their game by offering this repro at an unbelievable price. Alan B, the brain behind this repro has rightly said in his review and I hereby quote, ""My own vintage 4” chessmen are on loan for the Staunton Standard exhibition in St.Louis, but I wish that these chessmen could have been part of that exhibit, they are that good!"". I do posses chess sets from other vendors like HOS, OS and I must say that CB has superseded them in terms of quality w.r.t the price. Well done!

Right On

I normally don't buy reproduction sets but made an exception for this set since it is so rare and impossible to find an original. This is also the first set I have purchased from Chess Bazaar. I'm glad I bought the set on both counts! It appears to be a very accurate reproduction of the original - although some fault could be found with the rendition of the Knights. However, the set as a whole is so beautifully done I don't even mind the slight flaws to the Knights. The workmanship and finish are great. Thanks, Chess Bazaar!

The 1904 Cambridge Spring Set is truly a great set ever produce by Chess Bazaar. A set not to be missed by collectors. Centennial fidelity replica

I've been collecting original antique chess sets for years and also replicas of these chess games. Since I discovered Chess Bazaar, I bought them exclusively from my reproductions of old chess games.\nThe reproduction of Cambridge Springs 1904 is the 14th chess set that I acquire in Chess Bazaar. It is an exceptional chess set for its fidelity to the original. The antique finish of the white pieces is the best one seen so far.\nI have a picture of Marshall with this game of chess, and the reproduction is absolute.\nI must give my thanks to Chess Bazaar for making antique chess games that are impossible to find, and with great quality at a very affordable price.\n

Wonderful surprises

Kudos to all those involved in creating this wonderful reproduction from the historic tournament that catapulted GM Frank Marshall to fame. What a wonderful surprise when these were announced.\n\nBeing an aficionado of these American Chess Company sets, I must tell you that this reproduction is extremely accurate and simply the best quality for the price. From the spire topped Kings and low profile dome on the Queen’s coronets, extra detail taken to replicate the turning rings and original style bases, these are everything that I expected. \n\nEven the Knight’s profile matches the images from the original chessmen used in the famous tournament held in Cambridge Springs, PA and are simply quite impressive. \n \nWith some minor changes your offering would be almost perfect, but I understand the costs involved and certainly commend you for bringing this much anticipated set to the public again.\n \nMy own vintage 4” chessmen are on loan for the Staunton Standard exhibition in St.Louis, but I wish that these chessmen could have been part of that exhibit, they are that good!\n
