Amazing Set!

This set makes all my other wooden sets seem crude in comparison. Every piece is masterfully carved and finished with great detail. Every piece is so satisfyingly heavy. I absolutely love the stubby rooks. A boxwood and ebony set of this quality would cost you hundreds of dollars more from other retailers. I’m glad I treated myself to this set.

Set came in MINT condition!

I must say that this set really surprised me with how beautiful it looks, feels and plays. It arrived in MINT condition and is definitely one of their best designs. The knights and rooks are just so strong yet elegant looking. One of my favorite sets now…

Excellent

I didn't think I would be so enthusiastic about this set. The horses are symmetrical and very detailed. Just like in the pictures. Thank you for the great work.

A lovely set

This set proved perfect for me. The pieces stand well on 50mm squares, being neither crowded nor sparsely placed. They are beautifully turned, with just enough variation in the carving to give each knight the merest hint of individuality. The weighting of the pieces affords even the pawns a delicious sense of heft and solidity, which is accentuated by the firm cloth on the base, without the insecure feeling that fluffier fabrics sometimes give other similarly weighted sets.\n

The Original in a Stunning Reproduction

I have patiently waited for the return of Chess Bazaar’s 1849 Original Staunton Pattern Reproduction, which was unavailable for several months. This is an essential chess set for collectors, demonstrating the profound leap forward created by designer Nathaniel Cooke and manufacturer John Jaques, which was subsequently endorsed by unofficial world champion Howard Staunton. Prior to the original Staunton, chess sets emphasized intricate designs. Many of these, such as the English Barleycorn, the Regency, and the St. George, had strong vertical components. In fact, the pieces were so tall relative to their bases that they easily tipped over during play. Cooke’s design emphasized wide bases and a low center of gravity, and eventually it became the international standard in competition. The rooks in this 1849 reproduction have wide foundations. The bishop’s mitre cleft is delightfully broad, and the bisected finial is a nice detail. The knight is the classic style that denotes a true Staunton design. Each piece’s height is in beautiful proportion to the rest. The additional touch of king-side stamping on the rook and knight is unnecessary for modern notation, but a welcome detail for historic accuracy. All of the pieces are suitably weighted, and I found the craftsmanship to be without defects of any kind. There is ample room for the 1849 Original Staunton Pattern Reproduction in Chess Bazaar’s 3.75-inch to 4.1 inch coffer box. I am delighted to own a piece of history for use on special occasions.

Perfect!

I have used this set exclusively for the past couple weeks. It would be my top choice for a traditional tournament sized Staunton set with 3.75"" King (95mm) for use on a board with 2.25"" (55-57mm) squares. Of course, a nice wooden board is a must and Chess Bazaar has an excellent selection. The pieces are heavily weighted and perfectly balanced and I have never used a set that was more pleasurable to play with - just an incredible feel in the hands when moving the pieces, and all pieces have perfectly flat bottoms (a must for the ultimate in perfection). There are some close seconds, such as the 1900 Marshall reproduction. That was my former top pick, but I have recently come to prefer the chunkier style rooks of this set. If you prefer rooks a bit less chunky and maybe slightly taller, then some later styles may suit you better, such as the 1865-1870 Steinitz or the 1900 Marshall reproductions. If you prefer a bit more modern Staunton styles, I would highly recommend one of the recent Sinquefield Cup versions. Either the 2014 or the 2017 are both excellent choices, depending on which style knight you prefer. I highly recommend this original 1849 style.

Top Notch

Amazing reproduction of the first historic Staunton pattern chess set. Pieces were all perfect with no flaws or defects noticeable. Not even any tiny flaws could be found. Amazing original design with wide bases for stability, particularly the knights and rooks. The pieces are all well weighted for a nice feel and balance in the hands. A pleasure to play with. Top notch workmanship and high quality, lustrous ebony, well polished. Perfect set!

a great set to use and to display.

I teach chess to children. I will use it to show my students what the first Staunton sets looked like. I will also use it when I play at my chess club.

The Finest Reproduction 1849 Original Staunton Pattern Chess Set Available In The Market!

I managed to order the Reproduction 1849 Original Staunton Pattern Chess Set on backorder a couple of days before Chess Bazaar had new stocks, and it arrived today, about six days after I had placed my order. I am totally impressed by this set and it has become my favourite set over the Modern Staunton Series and CB Red Rum (which I also own). I consider this set to be superior to the other 1849 Original Staunton with 4.4 Inch King, because the Kings in this set are tournament sized (3.75 Inch), the Bishops have unique yawning clefts in their mitres, and the Knights are awesomely carved. Sure, the Modern Staunton Series may be sleeker but everything about this set drips with historicity - it is a reproduction of the prototype Staunton Chess Set that lead to the development of all other Staunton Chess Sets - just look at the solid chunky Rooks - I cannot stop touching them!. Another touch of historicity - the King Side Stamping, finely etched and neatly done. Thank you Chess Bazaar for bringing back these awesome reproductions of Staunton Chess Sets!\n\n

Very impressed and well worth the wait

This set was on backorder for over a month. I wanted an 1849 set and it was sort of an impulse buy since my real reason being on the Chessbazaar site was looking at clearance items. Being an impulse buy I really didn't research but since it was on backorder I had a while to read reviews, posts in chess sites, etc. I knew a lot that could be wrong with a reproduction.\nThe set arrived and unpacking it I was very happy, with no noticeable issues or damage. I usually don't write reviews but I decided I would and I take a closer look at the set the be as accurate as possible. Referencing ""Jaques and British Chess Company Chess Sets"" by Alan Fersht (available on Kindle). I looked at the set in detail- the height of the pieces, details of the Knight. One comment I saw more than once was the rook was incorrectly taller than the knight- not the case with the chessbazaar set. This is a high quality reproduction and I got it at a great price. \n

Great set

This is a great set! Beautifully made, nicely weighted and I just LOVE the King side stamping. The King size of 3.75"" also makes it ideal for normal play.

This set is the one

I've purchased about 25 sets over the past five years, from a variety of vendors. This set arrived today and immediately became my favorite. It ticks all the right boxes for me: very well made, tournament size, nicely weighted, and has lots of character. I like the design of every single piece - especially, to my surprise - the chunky rooks. I also own CB's other reproduced 1849 set - the one with antiqued boxwood pieces and somewhat different piece designs. While the prior 1849 set is nice, this newer 1849 is simply awesome.
