1950 Dubrovnik Bobby Fischer Reproduced Chess Set Version 3.0

Presenting the upgraded version of Reproduced 1950 Dubrovnik Bobby Fischer Chess Set Version 2.0 in Burnt Boxwood / Natural Boxwood.

What's New in Version 3.0

The Dubrovnik chess set is influenced by the Staunton design and is regarded as a timeless classic. Based on feedback from our customers, this new version is an accurate reproduction of the original design. The artisanal work took over a week to complete, resulting in a stunning masterpiece of exquisite beauty.

Features

  • King Height: 3.7"
  • Base Diameter: 1.5"
  • Double weighted pieces with thick green felt bases
  • Dark pieces: Burnt Boxwood   |   Light pieces: Natural Boxwood

Weight: 1210 grams (42.68 oz) ± 10%

Exquisitely Crafted

This richly detailed chess set features extra weighting for stability, precise carving, and buff polished pieces for a lavish touch. A timeless design with impeccable artistry makes it stand apart from any other chess set.

Historical Significance

Originally commissioned for the IX. Chess Olympiad in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia (1950), sculpted by Petar Poček, the set featured smooth curves, capped bishops, and unique knights. It upheld the tradition of no religious symbols and bore a discreet metal badge inscribed with "IX. šah olimpijada 1950 Dubrovnik Jugoslavija".

In the 1960s, cartoonist Andrija Maurović redesigned the set, popularized by Bobby Fischer. His original set was later stolen, making authentic versions extremely rare.

Collector's Appeal

Only about 50 original sets were produced and are now exceptionally scarce. Chessbazaar now offers a precise reproduction with weighted pieces, retaining the essence of the original design while correcting prior flaws.

Craftsmanship

  • Uniformity: Each piece is crafted to be as identical as possible
  • Thick green felt: Offers a premium and comfortable playing experience
  • Double-weighted: Enhances grip and balance during intense play

Note: Original Dubrovnik chess pieces were non-weighted. The 1970 version used by Bobby Fischer has subtle design differences. The 1950 Dubrovnik Olympiad set was never sold in stores.

Package Includes

34 Chessmen (including 2 extra queens), Chess Board, and Storage Box
