Reproduced Hungarian Series chess set is made up of ebonized boxwood and natural boxwood. The King proudly stands at 3.93 inches and its base is a robust 1.6 inches. Broad base and superb size proportioning from the king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship in all the chess pieces. Dark chess pieces are exquisitely crafted in ebonized boxwood. The set is entirely handmade in India and weighted for prodigious hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board.(purchase separately).

The opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces have pristine cut green felt pads on their wide bases which give you the smooth movement on the chess board.

History: The original chess set was produced in the "socialist times" in the late 70's, early 80's. Interestingly this chess set was designed without any religious symbols, without the king crown or bishop mitres cut. The pieces were designed for chess tournaments to play and had wide bases. They were thick green felted but were non-weighted. The reproduction of Hungarian chess set has been attempted - but never before accurate like this. This reproduction exemplifies a perfect combination of class and history.

Design & Quality: Appropriately weighted these pieces are very stable on board and a pleasure to touch and feel. Each piece is meticulously carved and buff polished by hand to give it a rich and long lasting shine. The design, quality, and craftsmanship of these chess pieces is unmatched and that is what made them favorite of the masses.

The original Hungarian chess sets are very hard to find and selling at thousands of dollars, but that is not every what every chess collector can spend on a hobby. chessbazaar worked very hard to take out this repro design at a very affordable price tag while maintaining the nostalgic historic feeling and unmatched craftsmanship of the original chess set.

In-Box items: Retail package consists of 34 chessmen, 2 extra queens included. chess board NOT included in this sale.

Caution: These chess pieces are neither waterproof nor UV-resistant

Customer Reviews
Excellent set Review by Chess Praxis
This fine reproduction set you can never find any where else except in Chess Bazaar. In addition with excellent refinement this set is truly indeed a better set than the original by comparison. It is indeed a great set that I have collected to be owned (Posted on 10/8/2018)
very unique Review by Okie
I bought the original set in Hungary in 1980. That time it was an inexpensive, socialist "mass product". It was not weighted,, the quality of the wood was average... Nowadays is very difficult to find this chess set even in Hungary. The replica of Chessbazaar is fine work, of course better quality than the original was. (Posted on 12/15/2016)
