But in the varied and wide field of openings is the age and the history of the opening really that much better? I’m partial to the Catalan and its solid lines for white. Started in 1929 in Barcelona at the height of the Great Depression many of the younger players of today often discount both history and an older opening like the Catalan. Some say it’s been replaced by the Reti and King’s Indian openings, if it’s used at all, it’s a debate especially at the club level.

The question that can really be asked by any player and at any level in chess strategy is older better?

I say yes because chess is a strategical game, and ultimately chess is life. History has proven time and time again that those who ignore history pay a large price for this ignorance, the same is true in strategy which is why studying and mastering openings becomes all the move vital. Those that study history and strategy of chess openings will remember to not be making the mistakes of the past.
