After the tremendous success of our reproduction of the original 1849 Staunton chess set, chessbazaar proudly presents another member of the same family, the reproduction of 1852 Harrwitz Staunton Pattern Chess Set. The original antique 1852 Harrwitz set in playable condition is very very hard to find and may cost thousands of dollars if available. Our Repro Circa 1852 Harrwitz Staunton Chess Set is a humble try to bring this legendary design to life and to let chess enthusiasts experience the game with this beautiful chess set which was not possible hitherto.

Chess Pieces Weight: 2250 grams (79.36 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%

Reproduced Circa 1852 Harrwitz Staunton pattern chess set in genuine ebony wood and antiqued boxwood. Hand-crafted with precision and care, Circa 1852 Harrwitz brings vintage experience to the masses. The King proudly stands at 4.5" tall with a base diameter of 2 inches. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. Pieces have unique rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen for smooth movement on the chess board. The Knights are well-reproduced and represent the highest grade of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer.

The dark chess pieces are made of ebony wood. It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional. The opposing pieces are made of antiqued boxwood. Boxwood is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The knights are well-crafted and exhibit the sky-high level of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer.

Craftsmanship: Each piece is meticulously hand carved from the finest grade wood. The set is entirely handmade in India and heavily weighted for prodigious hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. The Knights are somewhat similar to the 1851 Morphy style knights, vertical miter of the bishops is charming. All chess pieces have a wide base which adds another interesting dimension to the set. Each chessmen is carefully handcrafted in India with dainty details. The design, quality, and craftsmanship of these chess pieces are comparable to the original chess sets that are sold for $2000+ by other retailers.

The Birth of the Staunton Pattern Design: Named after Howard Staunton, the unofficial world champion of the time, the first Staunton set was produced by John Jaques of London which was beautiful in its functionality yet easy to be produced in large scale. The pieces were rugged with heavy stable bases which did not tumble easily. The rooks were turned to look solid castles, the pawns were minimalist but refined, the bishops had simple mitres, the tall king was distinguished with a cross finial and the queen with coronet. This functional design of chess pieces was taken very well by chess enthusiasts and it became very popular quickly. Later it became the only design accepted by FIDE for tournaments. There are many variations in the design available now but most of these have been derived from the original Staunton design. Know More->

New king side stamping process: The new king side stamping is accomplished through an innovative process for a uniform stamping. King side rook and knight have been stamped in both black & white side. A crown emblem on the foreheads of knights and on top of the turrets of the rooks which stands on the side of the kings on both sides. The main concept behind the king side stamping is to identify and differentiate their positioning on to the king's side of the board. Another reason for using king stamping is that the rooks and knights are often designated by being the "queen's knight", the "king's rook", etc. The kingside bishop does not need any such identification as they move in their respective colors only.

A piece of art: Handcrafted in India, by the passionate designers of chessbazaar whose wish is to present you with the most wonderful reproduction of Circa 1852  Harrwitz Staunton design we have ever made. We have also stamped our brand name on the base of kings. Our team of expert carvers put their hearts into the smallest little details of this chess set and have closely worked to bring out this revised reproduction as perfect as it can be. The result of this hard work of these master craftsmen is a truly wonderful design and a masterpiece which any connoisseur will admire.

Recommended Board Size: (2.36") (60 mm) sq.

New Antique Finish Process: The new antique finish is accomplished through an innovative four-step secret process of color and rotational 3-D polishing for a uniform finish. This new antique finish even prevents pieces from cracks and splits and at the same time it gives the set a look and feel of century’s old oxidized boxwood which is markedly darker than normal boxwood.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

Weights: The set is heavily weighted with lead and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.

Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.
